If your young one loves Tangled as much as you do (who doesn’t love Tangled?), then you may be fielding requests for a Tangled bedroom. After reading this post, you can confidently tell your kiddo, “We’ve got this. Mother knows best!”

See what I did there? 😉

There are many ways to go with a bedroom inspired by Tangled (also the best restrooms in the Magic Kingdom). You can go big with elaborate built-ins or something much simpler, and both will look great. OK, if you’re NOT creating a built-in tower in your child’s room, DON’T show them pictures of that. I speak from similar experience…

Really, as long as you’re cool with purple, you’re golden. Wait, purple? Oh yes, purple. Many, many shades of purple.

We’ll come back to that in just a few.

Creating the design plan for a Tangle themed bedroom

Best place to start for inspiration for your design? Why the movie, of course! And there’s lots to work with. Colors, shapes, symbols, setting, etc.

Fire up the popcorn and watch the movie with your decorator’s hat on. You’ll be surprised the things you notice. Jot them down!

If you enjoy the Tangled rest area in the Magic Kingdom, pull out those pics for inspo too (we’ve all taken pictures of those restrooms). Maybe you have a few books or toys related to the story as well. They’re all fodder for creating your own design plan.

The foundation of your design plan is the purpose of the room. We’re making the assumption of a bedroom, but if you also need space for a desk or similar, be sure that you’re accommodating what you need to the room to do.

Color palette for a Tangled inspired kid’s room

Next you want to figure out your color scheme. Some confuse this with selecting a wall color, but it’s much more than that. The color palette includes all of the elements going into the room – furnishings, soft goods, accessories, etc.

Be sure to take your existing finishes into account as you select your color scheme. You want to work with the items that are staying like furniture, flooring, etc. – not work against them. This notion actually makes some of your selections easier as it naturally narrows down choices.

BTW, if you know this is just a shorter-lived moment in your child’s bedroom décor, its also perfectly fine to just ignore what doesn’t work from a design perspective. Just go with the mood and the moment. Do what you want. This is meant to be fun!

OK, back to the purple.

It’s hard to ignore the purple. Lavender, lilac, magenta, grape, royal. The good news is that almost any shade of purple will work, and you can mix your purples too if you’re so inclined.

And if you or more importantly your child cannot bear purple? Fear not, there are a few other colors to work with (pink, anyone?), but Rapunzel’s signature color IS purple.

How to use the palette

As you can see, the colors that we’re working with in this palette are pretty colorful. I’ve included six paint colors for reference, however I would not recommend trying to use every single color in one room. If you want to create a Tangled bedroom in your home, pick 3-4 colors to work with. If you prefer to keep your walls neutral, a soft white like Benjamin Moore White Dove or Sherwin Williams Pure White would work best.

This color palette is a starting point. A way for you to visualize the colors that make up the palette and how they might relate to each other and your existing finishes in your room. If you find a similar shade but maybe a bit darker, or lighter seems to go better with your existing furniture or lighting situation, then go with that color.

As you’re shopping for decor, have your color samples on hand so you can make the best decisions. Even if you’re not using a color for the wall, a paint color sample is super useful to get the colors just right. Those chips from the paint store are free, so no excuses!

If you’re making a lot of your purchases online, I have some tips for that too further down.

Tangled bedroom colors

Venetian Yellow

The lightest color in the palette, Sherwin Williams Venetian Yellow is a light depth color. A mellow yellow if you will, that contrasts nicely with the purple-y colors below.

Daisy

A bold orangey-yellow, Sherwin Williams Daisy is light-medium depth paint color. It mimics the color of the sun symbol (for you stencilers out there).

Childlike

Sherwin Williams Childlike is a light-medium depth pink paint color. It will stand up well to the purple colors on this palette and help break up all the grapey-ness. You might find it pretty potent for all 4 walls. In that case, try its lighter neighbor, Lighthearted Pink.

Euphoric Lilac

On the lighter side of a light-medium depth paint color, Sherwin Williams Euphoric Lilac is a pretty choice for a bedroom wall color. If you’re shy of using colors on walls, Spangle is a lighter, softer version of this color.

Vigorous Violet

Sherwin Williams Vigorous Violet is a dark purple color with a healthy dose of red in it. This is a good color for an accent wall or to pick up in any number of accessories.

Concord Grape

By far the darkest color in this palette, Sherwin Williams Concord Grape is a deep purple color. In low light many colors of this depth can look black, but not Concord Grape. You will never mistake that it’s purple. It would be a super bold choice to put this on all 4 walls. If you’re looking to add the lanterns or sun pattern to you’re a wall, this color would be a great backdrop.

A Few Words About Sampling Colors

It’s easy enough to grab free paint chips from your local paint store, but if you’re considering painting the walls, then you definitely need larger samples that you can see in your room with your specific lighting.

Sampling paint on the walls used to mean not so cheap sample pots from the paint store that you then had to paint and wait to dry at home in several areas of your room to get it just right. These days, all you need to do is head to Samplize.com where you can order your color, and in most cases, have it on your doorstep the next day.

The samples are made from real paint and are peel and stick. You can move them around your room and up against furniture, décor, etc as needed. I have to admit, after renovating our entire first floor last year, I’m a bit of a Samplize junkie!

Something That I Want: the fun part of the Rapunzel bedroom design plan

Ok, now that you’ve got the color palette worked out, now it’s time for some fun. How are you going to bring this Tangled bedroom to life?

Look at that list you created when you watched the movie with your decorator’s hat on. What did you see that inspires you?

Here’s my list, in no particular order:

  • Magical flower
  • Sun symbol
  • Floating lanterns
  • Florals everywhere
  • The tower
  • Snuggly Duckling
  • Painted murals
  • Frying pan
  • Wood & painted furniture
  • Festival pennants
  • Castle
  • Tiara

This movie is so rich with different themes for decorating. What speaks to you? What could you do in your room? I’ve put together a couple of mood boards for some modest bedroom makeovers. I think most people who know which is the fuzzy end of a paint brush and are somewhat acquainted with a glue gun could pull these off.

I’ve seen Pinterest pictures of some really AMAZING bedrooms inspired by Tangled. If that’s in your skill set and/or budget, I encourage you to think big.

Build that tower. Hand paint that wall mural with the lanterns floating in the sky. Hopefully my modest mood boards will offer inspiration as well. Please send pictures. 🙂

Why a mood board?

A mood board is simply a place where you can collect all of your design elements (paint colors, décor, etc). You can use something as simple as Microsoft Word. However, a blank PowerPoint slide or the free version of Canva, works better so that you can easily move your images around on the page.

To get started, copy the color palette image from this blog post for color reference. Then start pasting in images of the various decor pieces you’re considering. Add and delete items as you pull the room together.

Now you have a visual reference to see if all the pieces work together. This is especially useful for online shopping. The best way to see if the items you’re looking at online will coordinate is to create a mood board.

You may still wind up returning an item or two that don’t work, because again there are certain inherent pitfalls to the online shopping game. But taking the time to put together a mood board will prevent many of the headaches online shopping can lead to. It does not need to be fancy or take much time at all!

I’ve Got a Dream: the Tangled bedroom mood boards

Mood Board #1 – focusing on the florals

floral-mood-board

Flowers are everywhere in this movie and I personally love it. This first mood board incorporates that theme with a floral wall behind the bed. You could make this smaller like a headboard effect or go big and do a whole wall. This example features faux flowers, but you could also find colorful floral wallpaper for a similar effect.

Don’t you just love the upholstered bed? So cozy looking. And that floral shaped pink area rug is super cute and fits in perfectly.

Speaking of beds, I think you could also create a flower headboard with a bunch of faux florals and a TON of hot glue. Or maybe cover the posters of a 4-poster bed? I’m not sure how the headboard will hold up once it comes time to take the flowers down though. Hmmm.

The freestanding mirror is surprisingly reasonably priced. You can find some more ornate mirrors for 10X the cost, but this one is under $200 and comes in several different finishes. I selected the wood because that’s what Rapunzel’s mirror looked like in the movie, plus it repeats the wood in the Snuggly Duckling sign.

The sun-shaped mirror and the Snuggly Duckling sign are from Etsy, of course. It’s such a great resource for unique and custom décor pieces.

Mood Board #2 – full on princess

tangled-princess-mood-board

This second concept leans much more into the princess theme. It has a few more sparkly elements, and lighter color palette, and a bit of glam.

Google “princess bed” and you get a TON of choices. You’re sure to find something that fits your taste and pocketbook. I liked the idea of a crown cornice and sheers – this could even make a regular bed feel princess-y.

Still loving the florals, I had the idea to cover the cornice in flowers. Or you could cover it in faux jewels (purple jewels, of course). Or even paint it to look like Rapunzel’s tiara.

A lighter lavender shade, Euphoric Lilac, is on the walls. A fancy lamp with the sun symbol, another Etsy find, is on the nightstand.  The lavender curtains have a bit of gold shimmer woven in them. And a small gallery wall features scenes and symbols from the movie.

So fun for young ones and so easy to do!

FAQ

When planning a Tangled-themed bedroom, it’s essential to draw inspiration from the movie itself, considering colors, shapes, symbols, and settings. Taking note of elements like magical flowers, the sun symbol, floating lanterns, and Rapunzel’s tower can guide the design process. Additionally, understanding the purpose of the room, whether solely a bedroom or incorporating other functionalities like a desk area, ensures the design meets practical needs.

The color palette plays a significant role in capturing the essence of a Tangled-inspired bedroom, with purple being a predominant color due to Rapunzel’s signature hue. Other colors like yellow, pink, and green can complement the purple theme and evoke elements from the movie, such as the sun symbol and floral motifs. While purple is central, it’s essential to consider existing finishes and furnishings when selecting complementary colors to ensure harmony in the overall design.

Creating a mood board is a valuable tool for visualizing and coordinating colors and decor elements in a Tangled-themed bedroom. This can be done using software like PowerPoint or Canva, allowing for easy arrangement of images and color samples. Sampling colors, particularly larger paint samples from websites like Samplize.com, helps in accurately assessing how colors will appear in the room’s specific lighting conditions, aiding in decision-making during the design process.
